What is Orthokeratology?

Ortho-K is a non surgical procedure that eliminates the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. Also known as Corneal Reshaping/Refractive Therapy (CRT), Gentle Vision Shaping System (GVSS), Vision Shaping Technology (VST), Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK) and finally, Overnight Corneal Reshaping (OCR); it gently reshapes your eye while you sleep using specially designed therapeutic hard contact lenses.

How does it work?

Simply put, Ortho-K uses the science of changing the curvature or shape of the cornea to change how light is focused on the retina at the back of one’s eye. Not everyone is a good candidate for Ortho-K. A multitude of extra tests, including a corneal topographer, allows your optometrist to determine if you or your child is a good candidate. If so, the information gathered from all the instrumentation is used to create a custom lens specifically designed for your eye alone.

What is it used for?

This safe and effective treatment is a great alternative to refractive surgery as it provides the same benefits of LASIK however are not permanent. If one chooses to stop wearing these lenses, their corneal shape will return and so will their habitual prescription. They are now able to resume their wear of prescription glasses and/or contact lenses.

Ortho-K is now gaining spot light on its role in myopia control in children. Studies have shown that using these lenses can slow down the progression of myopia. Children make great Ortho-K candidates and wearers as the concern of their parents with their high motivation helps in learning how to wear and care for the lenses quickly.

Is it safe?

Approved by the FDA in 2002, Ortho-K is a very safe and reversible procedure. As with all types of contact lenses, there is the automatic small risk of complications including minor infection. This risk is greatly minimized by following with diligence the regime of careful cleaning and disinfecting and maintaining the necessary progress visits.

Ortho-K is an exciting option available and Ottewell Eye Care is privileged to be one of a few offices in the city to offer it to our patients. Please ask the staff and/or your optometrist about your candidacy and if Ortho-K is a right fit for you!
